San Jose/Limon Highway Closure UPDATE

Travelers have reported that the main highway from San José to Limón was open from Siquirres to Limón yesterday but the painting is apparently still in progress. Personal accounts also indicated that the road was actually open from Limón to Rio Blanco, five miles west of Guapilis, but closed through the national park to the tunnel at Surqui.

Reports from Limón on Saturday night indicated that the highway was being painted starting in San José and progressing slowly and this corresponds to other personal accounts we've received.

We've had no indications or news whether the highway is going to be closed completely today or whether it will be one lane with controlled one-way access so travelers should check with hotels and other tourist spots about accessibility. Perhaps the best sources of information would be the gas stations or the San José/Limón bus depot.

We've had very little news here in Puerto Viejo, other than the original article at www.amcostarica.com on Friday and their morning paper today had no further information. Access to MOPT still isn't available so we're having to rely on friends and guests who require use of the highway.

It might be more prudent to take the route through Cartago/Paraiso/Turrialba to Siquirres if no information is obtainable until the painting is completed to Siquirres.

We'll attempt to keep you informed but getting accurate information has been difficult and rumors are abundant.
